Why Lorem Ipsum Still Works After 500 Years

Published 7 October 2026 · 6 min read · By Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem ipsum is one of the oldest pieces of text in modern design. It was already in use when movable type was the cutting edge of publishing, and it is still in use today, sitting quietly in Figma files and WordPress drafts around the world. That kind of longevity is remarkable for any tradition, let alone one built from scrambled Latin. So what is the secret? Why has nobody managed to replace it with something better in five hundred years?

A Brief History

The text has its roots in a philosophical work by Cicero, written in 45 BC. The passage that gave rise to lorem ipsum reads, in the original Latin: "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit." Roughly translated, it means "There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain." It is an argument about the nature of suffering, and nothing about it suggests it would one day end up as the most widely read Latin passage in the world.

The scrambled version that we recognise today appears to have been assembled in the 1500s by an unknown typesetter who needed a specimen of Latin-looking text. It reappeared in the 1960s when the Letraset company included the passage on transfer sheets, and then in the 1980s when Aldus PageMaker and later Microsoft Word made it the default filler text in their templates. Those software defaults are the reason the text is now everywhere.

The Real Reason It Works

The longevity of lorem ipsum is not really about history or tradition. It is about a single design property that no alternative has managed to replicate: the text is legible enough to look like real content, but meaningless enough that nobody tries to read it.

This balance is surprisingly hard to achieve. If you fill a mock-up with English filler — "This is a placeholder sentence for design purposes" — readers will read it, and their attention will shift away from the layout toward the words themselves. If you use pure nonsense — "flibberty jabberwocky zzz" — readers notice immediately that the mock-up is incomplete, and the design feels unfinished. Lorem ipsum sits precisely in the middle. It looks like a real paragraph, it has real word shapes and real punctuation, but the moment you try to read it your brain gives up and returns to the visual information.

Why No Replacement Has Stuck

Over the years, designers have tried many alternatives. Themed variants like hipster ipsum and corporate ipsum have gained small followings, but they remain niche. Real English filler text has been tried repeatedly and abandoned because it distracts readers. Artificial placeholder text such as Lorem ipsum... in a different language never quite reads as convincing content. Meanwhile the original Latin version keeps turning up, because it does the job that all of those alternatives are trying to do, but better.

There is also a cultural reason. Everyone in the design and development world recognises lorem ipsum instantly. When a client sees it in a mock-up, they know immediately that the text is filler and that the design is a draft. That shared understanding is worth something. It saves a conversation and sets the right expectations.

What Changed and What Didn't

Almost everything else about design has changed. The tools have moved from metal type to typesetting software to the browser. The deliverables have moved from print to screens to apps to voice interfaces. The medium has moved from paper to pixels to augmented reality. But the placeholder text has barely changed at all. The same scrambled Latin passage has served all of these eras, and it will almost certainly serve the next one too.

What This Tells Us About Design

The lesson is not really about lorem ipsum. It is about the value of tools that solve one problem perfectly and then stay out of the way. The best design tools are not the flashiest or the newest — they are the ones that fit so naturally into a workflow that people forget they are there. Lorem ipsum has that quality. It does one thing: it fills space without distracting. And it does it so well that five hundred years later, nobody has seriously needed to replace it.
